It’s not an exaggeration to say that Shirley Jackson’s short story «The Lottery» went viral when it was first published in The New Yorker in 1948. After its publication, many readers wrote letters to the magazine because they were confused, angry, or in disbelief about this portrait of villagers blindly following their tradition of holding an annual lottery, in which one «lucky» person wins. Now considered to be one of the most important American short stories of the 20th century, it has finally been made into a movie which will be in movie theaters and available on all major streaming services this summer.
